Israel is fighting an existential war against Hamas Islamists, an enemy so imbued with hatred for Jews that it has pledged to continue the fight to terminate Israel and the Jewish people globally, irrespective of defeat in this battle (“Biden’s weapons curb sparks Israeli defiance, GOP’s impeachment push,” web, May 9). It is supported in this hatred by Iran and Iran’s many proxies, along with organized anti-Israel and Jew-hating groups throughout the world.

The U.S. has been the most important diplomatic ally of Israel and its armorer — but as electoral pressures mount for the Democratic ticket this fall, the Biden administration’s support has become conditioned on issues that were never a factor in urban assaults by American forces in Iraq. President Biden must serve the burgeoning anti-Israel and antisemitic wing of his party lest Electoral College votes from Michigan, Minnesota and perhaps a few other states go astray.

So moral principle and Israel’s desire for continued existence are subverted to the pursuit of votes.
