Kansas City Chiefs sign two new players ahead of training camp
Andy Reid has bolstered his ranks further ahead of the 2025 NFL season as his players look to regain their Super Bowl crown, adding two new faces to his off-season roster
The Kansas City Chiefs have continued to strengthen with the addition of two new players who participated in their mandatory minicamp.
Andy Reid's players have just wrapped up their offseason training program as preparations continue for the 2025 NFL season, with the AFC West franchise aiming to regain their Super Bowl crown next year after falling at the final hurdle against the Philadelphia Eagles last time out.
Chiefs star Travis Kelce has recently opened up about his retirement deliberations following that gutwrenching loss at Super Bowl LIX, although he was barely recognizable when he made his much-anticipated return to practice this week.
There to witness it were four tryout players, with the Chiefs hosting center Joey Lombard, tight end Geor’Quarius Spivey, offensive tackle Ricky Lee and wide receiver Tanner Knue at their practice facility on the grounds of the Truman Sports Complex.
Two of them, in particular, made a lasting impression on coach Reid, with AtoZ Sports reporting that Lombard and Spivey have been signed to the offseason roster.
It proved to be second time lucky for Lombard, who was one of the 60 tryout players at the team’s rookie minicamp in May. The 6-foot-5 and 305-pound center also tried out for the New Orleans Saints at their rookie minicamp.
Lombard has spent the past five years with South Dakota, starting 48 career games and earning second-team All-America honors in the 2024 campaign. He also picked up First-Team All-MVFC honors last season, as well as Second-Team All-MVFC honors in 2023.
Lombard announced his signing on social media in a joint post with OSMG North Agency on Thursday. "Congrats to OSMG family @joelombard_76 for signing with the @chiefs," the Instagram post read.
As for Spivey, he initially signed with the Chiefs in 2024 during training camp and caught one pass for 7 yards in the preseason. He did not make the roster, however, and spent this spring playing in the UFL for the Houston Roughnecks, catching seven passes for 65 yards.
Like Lombard, he has now been handed a second chance after finally securing his place on the roster, bringing a blend of athleticism and versatility at the tight end position.
Earlier this month, coach Reid was pumped about running back Isiah Pacheco, who came into OTAs with added muscle in readiness for the upcoming NFL season.
The two-time Super Bowl champion only played in seven regular games last season due to a fractured fibula sustained in Week 2, yet made a comeback toward the season's end. Unfortunately, however, Pacheco wasn't quite the formidable force last year.
With mere 37 rushing yards at 2.8 yards per carry during his playoff run, it wasn't the stellar performance expected from him. Yet Reid is thrilled with Pacheco bulking up, noting: "He looks good physically, he looks real good."
