The Dominican Republic and the United States renew an agreement to combat crime.

The Dominican Republic and the United States renewed a memorandum of understanding to share security information, strengthening cooperation in defense, combating transnational crimes, and providing humanitarian assistance.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicates that Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez and Patricia Aguilera, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy, signed the memorandum. This will enable both governments to share radar and sensor data with regional allies through an online information network known as the “Cooperative Situational Information Integration System.”

The memorandum also allows for cooperation during search and rescue operations, natural disaster relief, and maritime and air safety.

Roberto Álvarez, Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the importance of the memorandum, noting that it expresses a shared desire to strengthen their border surveillance capabilities, early threat detection, and data-based decision-making.

“Every interconnected radar, every monitoring buoy, and every shared information station will help protect the integrity of our populations and the sovereignty of our territories,” he said.

For her part, Patricia Aguilera highlighted the Dominican Republic’s cooperation and leadership in the Caribbean, recalling that joint efforts facilitated by this agreement “have resulted in historic seizures of illicit narcotics transiting through the region.”

“With the renewal of this agreement, we continue to make progress in the protection and security of our citizens,” he stated.
