Slovak politicians react to U.S. attack on Iran

President Peter Pellegrini has expressed concern over growing global tensions. In response to the United States' attack on Iran, he posted on a social network on Sunday, stating that he hopes the hostile parties in the Middle East – as well as in Ukraine and other crisis regions – will sit at the negotiating table as soon as possible. The USA bombed Iran’s nuclear sites in Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz on Sunday. Any conflict needs to be resolved at the United Nations and not through weapons, no matter how good the intentions are, Foreign Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) said in response to the U.S. night attacks on Iran. He added that Slovakia has repeatedly pointed out violations of international law. The U.S. attacks on Iran mark a turning point in the effort to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Iran continues to pose a threat to the region with its aggressive policies and support for terrorism, said Ivan Korčok, a presidium member of the opposition Progressive Slovakia party and former foreign affairs minister, reacting to the nighttime strikes. According to Korčok, the intervention followed the failure of diplomatic negotiations; however, he warned that the risk of escalation remains high.
